Goal Setting and Achievement: A series on success

It can be really hard to implement a new habit. Often times we decide on somewhat of a whim to change every aspect of our lives in order to be a “better person”. This often happens at the beginning of the year in the form of new year resolutions. Unfortunately this rapid decision usually follows by a sense of failure and regret when we quit a few days later. Why is this?

Well, usually it’s because you’ve bit off more than any sane person can chew. You tried to go from daily fast food runs to organic, home grown salads. On top of that you’re going to stop your coffee addiction and begin running 6 days a week. (Yeah, right.) It’s not that these goals are bad or even unattainable but if you make such a dramatic change in so many different areas you are setting yourself up for failure. I am speaking from experience here friend.

The better method to positive life changes are gradual, measurable adjustments.

A method that I can’t take credit for but do use myself is called S.M.A.R.T goals.

It is important to set goals in a way that sets you up for success. If you skip one of these aspects it will be harder to attain your goal because you won’t have an accurate measurement.

FitSmallBuisness.com has a great explanation with examples on how to set S.M.A.R.T goals. Check it out. Use one of the many worksheets out there to make sure you are setting yourself up for success.

Next up in this series, I’ll be talking about how to track a new habit for success.
