MLM or Multi-Level Marketing Companies have been growing in popularity in the last several years. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of harsh prejudice and stigma around network marketing. I was raised in a direct sales family. I have walked and talked sales since I started walking and talking. Over the years I have seen a lot of sides to MLM’s and have been able to separate the facts from fiction.

Myth 1: Pyramid Scheme
The number one thing you hear about network marketing companies is that they’re all big pyramid schemes. The definition of a pyramid scheme is “a form of investment (illegal in the US and elsewhere) in which each paying participant recruits two further participants, with returns being given to early participants using money contributed by later ones.” It is essentially the recruitment and investments with no product or service. That is illegal and unethical. Most network marketing companies are neither of those things. While most direct sales companies have a pyramid structure, it is no different than a company with a CEO and many levels of employees.
Myth 2: It’s Only for Stay-at-Home Mom’s
According to the Direct Selling Association, more than 20 million people in the US were involved in network marketing. While a large percentage involved are female, I can guarantee they are not all stay-at-home moms. These companies can be for men and women of all race, ethnicity, and walk of life. It’s not just for the woman who chose not to go to college and instead to stay at home with her kids. Direct sales isn’t for everyone, but it is for anyone. I am a nineteen-year-old college kid who is actively involved with a network marketing company and wear many other hats as a creative entrepreneur. Check out what I do here.
Myth 3: Only People at the Top Make Money
From what I have experienced, anyone can make money in network marketing. The 2-10% that pull in the big bucks from these opportunities are the ones putting in the hours. They’re the one not making excuses and taking charge. You can be one of those top earners if you let yourself!
Myth 4: You Have To Be a Sales Person
I have met people in all walks and stages of life that are in direct sales. I have met people that were born an entrepreneur and I have met people that don’t have a business savvy bone in their body. The beautiful thing about MLM’s is that you can pursue it as diligently or as lax as you choose. You don’t have to transform into the perfect saleswoman overnight! All you need to succeed is a good company and a great support network!

To all my fellow MLM extraordinaire’s, YOU ROCK!
